  • WASHINGTON - The last game of 2019 sure was not a pretty one. The Capitals and New York Islanders put together a sloppy 60 minutes of play with the Islanders just barely edging out the Caps 4-3 thanks to a dominant third period by goalie Semyon Varlamov.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Anaheim Ducks responded to a challenge from their captain Monday night, ending their own losing ways while also halting the New York Islanders' franchise-best 17-game point streak.

One game after chastising the team for a lack of physicality, Ryan Getzlaf led by example. He had a goal and an assist, and John Gibson made 26 saves as the Ducks defeated the Islanders 3-0 to end their three-game slide and a five-game skid at home.

Playing physical again was a topic at the morning skate.

'That's definitely the response we wanted,' Getzlaf said. 'Obviously we talked a little bit as a group and some things were said, and necessary to kind of respond as a group. Iringg 1 0 42 download free. I thought we did a good job of that tonight.'

The Islanders went 15-0-2 during the longest point streak in team history, which started with an Oct. 12 victory over Florida. They hadn't lost in regulation since the day before that against Carolina, but had gone into overtime in each of their past four games before facing Anaheim. They lost in OT against San Jose on Saturday.

'Guys have committed a lot over a long time and we've won in different ways,' coach Barry Trotz said. 'It's just reality. We didn't play well enough to deserve to win. I think our guys are good enough pros to understand that. I'm not gonna kick cans or anything like that.'

The Islanders had a 16-5 advantage in shots during the first period and a 26-23 edge in the game, but couldn't find a way to beat Gibson, who earned his first shutout of the season.

After withstanding New York's best push in the opening period, the Ducks were able to do enough over the next 40 minutes to get only their second victory since Nov. 3.

Anaheim put the game away late in the third when Cam Fowler and Ondrej Kase scored just more than a minute apart.

'They were the hottest team in the league, so it was an easy game to get up for,' Fowler said.

The Ducks broke through in a scoreless game at 10:28 of the first when Getzlaf got his stick on a rebound after Rickard Rakell's shot from the blue line. In an attempt to clear the puck from in front, Islanders forward Jordan Eberle redirected it into his own net.

Getzlaf, whose sharp criticism of the team came after a 6-2 loss Saturday at Tampa Bay, scored his ninth of the season and extended his point streak to five games.

'(Getzlaf) is our leader and we understand that sometimes we need a kick in the butt,' Fowler said. 'He's a guy that can provide that, but on any given night you know he's going to come out and compete. He's certainly a guy that we look to when times get a little bit tough, and he was fantastic for us tonight.'

Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss made 20 saves. He was 8-0-0 during the point streak with 233 saves.

Greiss kept New York in the game until the 13:13 mark of the third period when Fowler took a pass from Getzlaf, who was next to the Islanders net, and scored his fifth of the season.

Kase added his third at 13:24 to put the game away, with Fowler getting an assist.

'That one stinks,' Islanders left wing Anthony Beauvillier said. 'We felt like we came (at them) hard in the first. They came out hard in the second. We didn't really maintain that compete level we had in the first. Having points for such a long time, this one kind of stinks.'

Game notes
Gibson took a puck to the upper body off a shot from Ryan Pulock and while lying on his side ailing in front of the net, reached up with his glove to stop a shot from Adam Pelech. Gibson stayed in the game. … The Ducks' Jakob Silfverberg took his 1,151st shot, moving into fifth place on the team's career list. … Greiss had a 1.96 goals-against average during New York's point streak, but he's given up three goals in each of his last three games.

Not that long ago, Jordan Eberle was a guy who just couldn't buy a goal in the postseason. During the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, it almost feels like the New York Islanders should challenge him to score the toughest goals possible.

Eberle fit a puck into an almost impossibly small window during the Islanders' 4-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins to take a 3-0 series lead in Game 3. As you can see from that goal (in the clip above this post's headline), Eberle is combining a dangerous mix of swagger and luck to a red-hot start.

That goal was his third goal in as many games during Round 1, while Eberle's also managed two assists to give him an impressive five points in three contests. We'll see if Eberle can carry that into the Islanders' attempt to sweep the Penguins in Game 4 (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN; Live stream), but either way, he's off to a blazing start.

From a sheer production standpoint, Eberle's totals (three goals, two assists for five points in three games) during this run are night-and-day from a rather disastrous first (and final) postseason with the Edmonton Oilers, when he failed to score a goal on 22 SOG in 13 playoff games back in 2016-17, settling for only two assists.

From an effort standpoint, though? After coming through in Game 1 against the Penguins, Eberle explained something many believed: that he really wasn't playing that poorly during that fateful final run with Edmonton.

'I didn't think I was playing that bad,' Eberle said, via NHL.com's Brian Compton on April 11. 'Pucks didn't go in. I seemed to be the blame of a lot of things. It was a big part probably of why I got traded from Edmonton.'

'It's nice to get another chance and another rip at it. Try to take advantage of this one.'

Eberle sure has taken advantage of this one, and those pucks sure have been going in.

Of course, Eberle would risk a trip to Barry Trotz's doghouse if his offense came at too much of a detriment to his overall game. By looking at the numbers, that doesn't seem to be the case; Eberle looks fantastic across the board according to Natural Stat Trick's metrics, including the fact that the Islanders have generated 72.09 percent of the scoring chances at even-strength with Eberle on the ice. That's impressive considering how often Eberle is drawing the likes of Kris Letang and Phil Kessel, and also shows that Trotz is getting the matchups he likes, as there hasn't been too much exposure to Sidney Crosby.

Can Eberle keep this up?

New York Islanders 2019

Over the long haul, definitely not. While Eberle's generally been one of the skilled shooters you'll see (watch that goal again if you need a reminder), no one's comfortably shooting at 25 percent, which is Eberle's current rate of three goals on 12 SOG. The truth is somewhere in between that ice-cold run with the Oilers and this scorching-hot stretch with the Islanders, and that's a point that is worth mentioning, both to fans and to front office members. Scorers, particularly snipers, are prone to slumps and lucky stretches. It's wiser to zoom out to the whole, rather than fixating on the too-good-to-be-true or, say, trading Eberle away after his worst slump.

Really, though, Islanders fans and Eberle (and Eberle's accountants) should just enjoy this ride, for however long it lasts. It must be almost as sweet for Eberle to silence his critics as it's been to score big, 'dagger' goals against Pittsburgh and win some huge games.

The Islanders will go for the sweep in Game 4 on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN. (Live stream)
